Individual Psychological Therapy

We work with individuals aged 18 or over (with no upper age limit) who are experiencing a variety of psychological difficulties.

We work with the ethos of supporting people to develop further coping skills to help overcome or manage difficulties more effectively. We recognise that psychological difficulties can be triggered by various factors and have commonly worked with individuals experiencing difficulties following:

- Bereavement
- Retirement
- Changes in physical health
- Lifestyle changes
- Relationship difficulties
- A traumatic or challenging event

We have experience of working with a range of psychological difficulties including but not limited to:

- Stress
- Anxiety/Panic
- Depression
- Low self-esteem
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Phobias
- Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

What the initial meeting looks like

We offer a safe and supportive environment for you to feel at ease and comfortable to talk openly about any difficulties. We work with you to help to overcome some of these difficulties and in doing so this work will be done at a pace that feels comfortable to you. We understand that some people have never previously accessed psychological therapy previously.

Therefore during our first session, lasting predominantly one hour, we hope to explain the concept of psychological support. We would aim to also gain a good understanding of any difficulties and consider with you different therapeutic approaches that may help you to move towards your goals and improve your quality of life. There is no obligation to continue with therapy following this first appointment and sessions can be stopped at any point during therapy should you wish to.

What therapy looks like, how long and frequency

Clinical Psychologists often integrate therapeutic approaches based on the individual’s needs, clinical experience and research. Clinical Psychologists can offer a range of different therapeutic approaches some that you may have heard of within the media, for example, Cognitive-Behavioural therapy (CBT).  Furthermore, we have received training and make use of theories, as examples, of social and cognitive development, identity and attachment.

Examples of some of the therapeutic approaches we can provide include:
- Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT)
- Compassionate Focused therapy
- Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT)
- Solution-focused based therapy
- Mindfulness

Therapy sessions typically last an hour long and are initially usually scheduled on a weekly or fortnightly basis. The length of therapy is dependent on your goals of therapy and this will be discussed at the first appointment.

A 2+1 service: What is involved?

We also offer a 2 + 1 service for people who would like an understanding of the difficulties they are experiencing but do not wish to undertake individual therapy at this time. This service may be useful for people who feel they are able to make changes, based on initial suggestions, on their own.

The 2 + 1 service involves three appointments:
The first appointment is an assessment appointment much the same as all our clients undertake. This appointment allows us to gain an understanding of your difficulties and generally takes a little longer than the average assessment appointment.

The second appointment typically follows two to three weeks after the assessment appointment. At this appointment we go through a formulation, or an understanding of your difficulties and think about the historical factors that have contributed to their development, trigger their presence and those factors that are maintaining them. The idea of the formulation is to empower you with an understanding that may allow you to make changes. We also provide suggestions regarding possible techniques and external accessible resources that could help you with the difficulties and allow you to make changes if you wish.

The third appointment, typically scheduled three months afterward, is a review appointment to see how things are going and make any further suggestions based on your progress/activities over the three months. ​
